OctaForge and Tesseract

EDIT: The poll passed with 36 votes for Tesseract exclusively and 8 votes for both. OF will be merging Tesseract in a month.

So as some of you probably already know, there is the new Tesseract renderer for Cube 2 out (http://cubeengine.com/forum.php4?action=display_thread&thread_id=2534, http://codepad.org/AksRxXjh) and OF will be merging it. My question however is,

should we keep support for the legacy Cube 2 renderer? Note that it's a lot of effort and burden for the project. The question is then, is it worth it? If we keep only Tesseract, all maps can count on it and thus use the full featureset of Tesseract. Keeping the legacy renderer is quite inferior to further development, and with introduction of physics engine, proper collisions and props, people with old hardware unable to run Tesseract won't be most likely able to run such maps anyway.

Please leave your opinion in the poll.

The poll is closing this

The poll is closing this Sunday. The results appear pretty clear though.

KISS!

Well, it's painful to leave people with old hardware behind (my lappy can't run it), but I'm all for going with Tesseract.

Reasons:

* no aardappel stalling it's engine development
* unified lighting and shadowing makes a lot of hacky stuff Just Go Away
* much less shader permutation maintenance
* limited resources project > less code is easier to maintain
* new gameplay options open up, destructable environments are much less of a problem now
* ease of mapping + great realtime rendering = obvious win. OF can provide the flexibility to take it even further with scripting and physics.

Well that's my point - it's

Well that's my point - it's painful, but then again, for the good of progress, let's do it. :)
